Chesterton Weekly 9/24/21
“The humorous look of children is perhaps the most endearing of all the bonds that hold the Cosmos together. Their top-heavy dignity is more touching than any humility; their solemnity gives us more hope for all things than a thousand carnivals of optimism; their large and lustrous eyes seem to hold all the stars in their astonishment; their fascinating absence of nose seems to give to us the most perfect hint of the humor that awaits us in the kingdom of heaven.”
- G.K. Chesterton

A Note from Mr. Janeiro
Dear Chesterton families,
Fall is upon us and the school year is in full swing. Your children have begun the hard but enriching work of harvesting wisdom from the various fields of their studies. As we pass the halfway mark of the quarter we would like to invite you to take advantage of a few opportunities:
Coffee and Conversation
Our first Coffee and Conversations of the year: Come in at 8:00am on Wednesday, September 29th for a little intellectual stimulation over a cup of caffeinated goodness. Why should the kids have all the fun? If you have ever felt that you would have enjoyed the type of education we are providing your children, then don't miss this. I will be leading a seminar on our patron G. K. Chesterton, speaking briefly of his background as a segue into some of his most notable works, many of which are part of our curriculum. We will read some of his shorter works together during the seminar.
Please RSVP with this form.
Fall Teacher Conferences - Please sign up ASAP!
These will be held on Thursday the 30th in two sections--one block in the afternoon, and one block in the evening, to accommodate parent schedules. It will be a half day for the students to allow us time to meet with you all, and touch base on each student's progress. At Chesterton, the student accompanies the parent, as all three discuss the successes and challenges so far, and work as a team to help the student grow.
Sign up for a time slot here.
As a reminder, your student’s grades and record of merits and demerits are listed in your Plus Portals site. Please be sure to sign in to review your student’s progress regularly (at least once a week). Please contact Mrs. Ryan by end of the school day on Wednesday if you or your student need help logging into Plus Portals.
We also post a calendar of tests. Click here to view it in line with our school events calendar.
Sheep Shearing
Students whose hair has grown like the cornfields--its time to gather in the crop! The general guide is that hair for boys should not touch the eyebrows, contact the collar or top the ears. Thank you, and happy clipping!
… Thank you for joining us for the fall teacher conferences, I hope to see you at the Coffee and Conversation, and gentlemen, I look forward to seeing your fresh cuts!

40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil and Evening at the Park - Oct. 1
40 Days for Life has begun! Not sure what that is? Read all about it here.
Each year during 40 Days for Life we go to the Access Abortion Clinic to spend an hour in prayer as a school. It’s a beautiful way to live out our mission in the public sphere. As the clinic is on a busier road, our young students are a beautiful witness to those driving by. One life has already been saved at the Access Clinic this year! Let’s save all the rest. This year we will pray together as a community at the clinic on October 1 from 5-6pm and then head to McCollum park for a fun evening of community. The House of Ambrose will be organizing the evening so keep your eye out for all the details from them.
October Open House - help us spread the word!
We are excited to host 7th and 8th graders at our Admissions Open Houses where we will give prospective students a sneak peek into life at Chesterton! If you have a 7th or 8th grade student, please be sure to sign up for an open house today. Ms. Ambuul will also make sure that you receive all of our admissions communications. If you would like any admissions materials from Chesterton to give to your friends and family, please reach out to Ms. Ambuul, emily.ambuul@cathf.com, and she can get you what you need.
We host our open houses on campus and during the school day so prospective students and their families can have a chance to really see us in action. They will have the opportunity to meet with our faculty, staff, and students, peek into our classrooms and see a socratic dialogue in action, tour our beautiful campus, and more. It's the perfect opportunity to get that taste of Chesterton Academy!
Please let us know if you have any family or friends who are interested in Chesterton! Feel free to call Ms. Emily Ambuul anytime regarding your own family’s high school search or if you of know any other families who might be interested.
We Could Use Your Help - lend your time and talents to Chesterton Academy!
Chesterton Academy is always looking for help from our parents in various ways! Many of you filled out a talent card at the House Supper Club a few weekends ago. If you missed those cards at the party or were not able to make it to the party, please let us know your talents here!
We do have two specific areas that we could use your talents:
We are in need of coaches. We could use a gentleman Saints basketball JV coach. We are looking into starting a lady Saints softball team. However, we need a coach to do this. If any parents are interested in coaching or know someone who would be interested in coaching here, please email athletics@cathf.com.
We are in need of drama help. The sophomores have begun their drama practices for The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood. We could use parents’ help in running lines during practices, gathering props, gathering costume items, and more. If you would like to help in drama, please email Ms. Whitten at lydia.whitten@cathf.com.
Join the Yearbook Club!
We had a great informational yearbook meeting on Wednesday! Thank you to all who could come and we missed those who were not able to make it. However, you can still sign up to join the club! Check out the top 8 reasons you should join the club and then sign up here!
Parents, are you interested in helping with the yearbook? Let Ms. Severance know at maureen.severance@cathf.com.
Middlemoot - featuring Mr. P. Lyon
On October 9th, our own Mr. P. Lyon will be giving a presentation at the Middlemoot Conference in Waterloo, Iowa, which is a regional academic Tolkien conference. The theme of the conference is “Philology: Love of Words, Friend of Words.” Mr. P Lyon’s presentation will tentatively be entitled “Roots and Branches: The Correspondence of Tolkien’s Earendil and Kullervo.” If you would like to see Mr. Lyon’s presentation, check out the registration here. At this time, we are not sure if the presentation will be live streamed. So please keep checking the registration page for updates!
